According to Ministry of Industry and Trade, demand on fertilizer has been growing strongly. However, domestic supplies of fertilizer are quite plentiful as more and more plants have been put into operations.
In the year 2013, Ninh Binh Fertilizer Plant with capacity of 560,000 tons/year and Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant with capacity of 800,000 tons/year have been put into operations; and together with Ha Bac Fertilizer Plant, Phu My Fertilizer has provided the supplementary sources of fertilizer to the market.
Production capacity of other fertilizers like NPK and phosphate will also increase due to production expansion projects.
It is estimated that production of fertilizer in 2012 was about 6.65 million tons, in which 1.62 million tons of urea had increased 64.8%, 3.2 million tons of NPK fertilizer had increased 12.3%, and 1.6 million tons of phosphate had increased 14.1% compared to those in 2011.
It is forecast that fertilizer demand in 2013 is about 10,325 million tons, specifically: 2 million tons of urea, 850,000 tons of SA fertilizer, 950,000 tons of potash fertilizer, and 3.8 million tons of NPK. Fertilizer production is about 8,055 million tons, in which urea reaches 2.2 million tons, NPK and phosphate fertilizers are about 3.7 million and 1,825 million tons respectively.
Thus, domestic production of phosphate and NPK fertilizers has met the basic needs. Especially, from a country dependent on imported fertilizer, Vietnam has become an autonomously independent supply of fertilizer and start to export since 2013.
When Vietnam is going to export fertilizer, business enterprises will have more advantages in competition due to its cheaper price compared with some countries. In order to avoid massive export, management agencies need to regulate by tax and mechanism of limitation to ensure efficient domestic supply.
