As reported by Phu My Fertilizer Plant, although the power outage in the afternoon of 22/05/2013 caused the massive power outage in 22 Southern provinces, forcing many businesses to stop production, Phu My Fertilizer Plant still maintained normal operation because its power system protection relay promptly and accurately operated, separating the plant power system from the national grid to ensure safe operation, preventing impacts of the power failure on the grid.
With a plant equiped with advanced and closed end technology like Phu My Fertilizer Plant, the active work of risk assessment, preventive measures and integral solutions to respond to incidents have been given high priority.
According to the design, Phu My Fertilizer Plant is powered by the two power sources, one from the national grid and the other from the standby generator at the Plant. The power from these two sources is merged to satisfy all additional loads of the plant to ensure its continuous operation.
Previously, due to failures from the national grid, the plant was affected many times, resulting in downtime causing severe damage to equipment, product loss, worth billions of VND when the Plant was stopped unexpectedly.
From 2011, the Plant’s electrical engineers actively conducted research, calculated and recalibrated installation specifications of the protection relay system to ensure stability of the power supply in the case of power failure inside or outside the Plant, helping the Plant reduce the downtime due to power system.
After specification recalibration of the protection relay system along with good maintenance and repair work of the Gas Turbine generator system in 2012, skill improvement of the operation maintenance workforce, power outages that can trigger down time have been reduced over the years. Especially, in 2012 and the first months of 2013, despite of many times of wavering incidents of the national grid, the Plant’s power system has remained stable without any downtime incident due to failure of electrical system.
Phu My Fertilizer Plant managed and operated by PVFCCo with capactity of 800,000 tons of urea/year applies the technology from Haldor Topsoe, Denmark for ammonia production and technology from Snamprogetti, Italy for urea production. These are closed-end production lines, the input material is natural gas, air and the ouput is ammonia and urea. With safe, stable operation performance, achieving and exceeding the design capactity for several years, plus the world’s 2nd record of 188 days of continuous operation without downtime, PVFCCo was recently honored to receive the certificate of excellence awarded by Haldor Topsoe.
