HCMC, on 25th April 2016 – PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo – stock code DPM, Phu My Fertilizer Plant) announced that the “Agricultural Doctor” program was started in Long An and Tien Giang Provinces since mid April 2016.
“Agricultural Doctor” is a series of practical, topical and interactive programs among four parties (the government – scientists – farmers – enterprises) including the main activities such as practical field surveys; sample analysis and scientificconferences with the active participation of local people so as to find practical solutions to farming issues. The Program has been jointly carried out by Trade Promotion Center for Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), Department of Crop Production, Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute, Southern HorticulturalResearch Institute, Agriculture and Rural Development Departments, local Agricultural Extension Centers, Farmer’s Unions and PVFCCo.
Based on the initiative of PVFCCo and Trade Promotion Center for Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) and closely connected with topical issues, the program in 2016 has focusedon finding suitable solutions against droughts and salt penetration in MekongDelta, especially for the two main crops in this region namely rice and fruitcrops.
Reportedly, since mid April 2016, scientific experts and officers of PVFCCoconducted field surveys andtook samples (soil, water, plants, …) for analysis. Then, atthe Conference held on 25th-26th April 2016, according to the survey and analysis results, competent authoritiesand experts presented reports and discussed on causes, currentstatus of damage, corrective solutions; gave recommendationsto farmers on proper farming techniques such as using salt tolerant seeds, feeding correct and balanced fertilizers, applying suitableseasonal schedule… for each sort of cropsin every different farming sub-zone.
In addition, to enhancesupport for forecast work, prevention and accurateevaluation of the salt-penetrationlevel in Mekong Delta, PVFCCo in coordination with Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) donated salinity meters to 13 provinces in Mekong Delta. They are specialized, modern and convenient equipment with high accuracy. Mr. Huynh Quoc Viet – Deputy General Manager of Long An Province Departmentof Agriculture and Rural Development gladly said: “These equipment will help local bodies promptly find out and identify impacts of salt penetration so as to provide timely preventive methods or proper arrangement of plant and animal structure to minimize any damage caused and also maintain stable agriculture production for local farmers”.
