Phu My NPK Reaches the One-Million-Ton Milestone – Steadfast Toward a Bountiful Harvest

For over two decades, PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo – Phu My) has steadily paved the way for Vietnam’s fertilizer industry: mastering urea production in 2004, pioneering chemical-based NPK production in 2018, and now achieving the remarkable milestone of one million tons of Phu My NPK. Behind this journey are dedicated people—tirelessly researching, listening to the needs of farmers, and continuously innovating—to bring forth products that ensure abundant harvests, safeguard national food security, and enhance the value of Vietnamese agricultural produce.

From Phu My Urea to the NPK Breakthrough – Mastering Modern Technology

More than twenty years ago, Vietnamese farmers still depended heavily on imported fertilizers. At that time, up to 90% of urea for agricultural use had to be imported—expensive and unstable in both supply and quality. The turning point came in 2004, when the Phu My Fertilizer Plant—the first petrochemical project of the Vietnam National Energy and Industry Group (Petrovietnam)—officially came into operation.

Phu My Urea quickly won the hearts of farmers nationwide: uniform granules, stable quality, higher crop yields, cost savings, and professional after-sales service through a dedicated distribution network. Within a short period, Phu My Urea captured over 40% of the domestic urea market and became the leading fertilizer brand in Vietnam.

Yet, for the people behind Phu My Urea, that was not the destination. A new aspiration emerged—to produce NPK fertilizer using advanced chemical technology. Previously, farmers relied on imported or manually mixed NPK fertilizers, which were less efficient. In early 2018, after a series of rigorous trials and adjustments, the Phu My NPK Plant successfully completed its pilot run and officially began commercial production—becoming Vietnam’s first chemical-based NPK plant meeting European standards.

Unlike conventional blended NPK, in which nutrients easily separate, evaporate, or leach away, Phu My NPK encapsulates balanced nutrients within each granule. This allows crops to absorb nutrients efficiently, minimizes loss, optimizes costs, and enhances yields. For farmers, this meant less waste, stronger plants, and more profitable harvests.

Mastering this modern NPK technology was far from easy. During the early stages, initial trial batches still faced challenges—granule uniformity, packaging appeal, and market suitability. In response, Phu My’s young engineers didn’t just stay in the control room; they went straight to the fields—rice paddies in the Mekong Delta, coffee farms in the Central Highlands, and pepper gardens in the Central region—to gather honest feedback from farmers and distributors, carefully documenting every detail.

These insights were systematically analyzed and fed into continuous improvement cycles. From laboratory to production line, solutions were implemented synchronously: optimizing formulas, adjusting additives, tightening moisture control, and upgrading packaging systems to meet professional standards. Each resolved issue marked a collective sigh of relief—because behind every improvement lay the trust and expectation of millions of Vietnamese farmers.

Beyond technological excellence, Phu My NPK stands out for its rigorous quality control. Inputs are carefully selected: premium ammonia and urea from the Phu My Urea Plant, and other components sourced from reputable global suppliers. Each batch of raw materials and finished products undergoes independent KCS testing and analysis, strictly adhering to PVFCCo’s standards and national regulations.

Even before regulations required it, PVFCCo–Phu My proactively monitored Cadmium (Cd) content—a heavy metal that can harm soil and crops. This pioneering effort positioned Phu My NPK as a “Cd-clean” solution, safe for export-oriented cultivation areas, especially durian plantations in the Central Highlands that must meet stringent international standards.

Innovation – The Foundation of Phu My NPK’s Leading Position

If Phu My Urea ushered in an era of self-sufficiency in nitrogen fertilizer, then Phu My NPK continues the legacy through relentless innovation to conquer a fiercely competitive market. Within a few short years, the plant introduced nearly 10 product lines and around 30 NPK formulations tailored to various soil types and crops across the country.

Remarkably, many of these formulations were not part of the original licensed technology portfolio—demonstrating the boldness and creativity of Phu My’s young engineers, who dared to step beyond their comfort zone. They developed and localized formulas by adjusting nutrient ratios to suit Vietnamese soil and farming habits—adding sulfur (S), enriching with secondary and micronutrients (TE), or modifying potassium forms to adapt to basalt soils in the Central Highlands and saline coastal regions.

At the Phu My NPK Plant, a clear target is set: to introduce at least one new formulation every year, embodying the spirit of continuous innovation for the advancement of Vietnamese agriculture.

Building on traditional NPK, in 2022 the engineering team pioneered Phu My NPK + Bio, an inorganic NPK enriched with beneficial microorganisms. These spores are encapsulated in the granules, multiplying in the soil after application—improving soil health, enhancing fertilizer efficiency, and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly agriculture.

Most recently, Phu My NPK 15-15-15+5S+TE SOP was launched—using premium potassium sulfate (SOP) instead of potassium chloride (KCl), making it ideal for sensitive crops like durian.

Another highlight is the Phu My Garden product line for urban agriculture—specialized NPK formulas for fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, and ornamentals. With elegant, convenient packaging and distribution through both traditional and modern retail channels, it helps “urban farmers” care for their gardens professionally and effortlessly.

Thus, every truck carrying Phu My NPK is more than just delivering fertilizer—it carries the intelligence, perseverance, and pioneering spirit of the engineers and staff behind it.

Despite market volatility and fierce competition, Phu My NPK has maintained its leadership through consistent quality and deep understanding of farmers’ needs. From the first urea granule in 2004 to the first chemical NPK in 2018, and now the million-ton milestone—this is the proud continuation of PVFCCo–Phu My’s journey.
