DEF - Phú Mỹ Xanh: The Safe and Effective Exhaust Gas Treatment Solution for Diesel Engines
Understanding DEF and its Mechanism in the SCR System
Diesel fuel has long played a vital role across most sectors—from transportation, industry, and agriculture to thermal power plants. Given its high efficiency and optimal operating costs, the diesel engine remains the preferred choice for high-power systems. However, diesel engines are also a source of NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions—a hazardous gas that negatively impacts the human respiratory system, promotes the formation of fine dust and ground-level ozone, and harms both public health and vegetation.
To tackle the environmental challenge posed by NOx emissions, DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) was introduced. It has become a highly effective solution, now widely used in nations with strict emission standards like Europe, the US, Japan, China, and India. DEF is a compound of high-purity urea at key concentrations of 32.5%, 40%, and 53%, with the remaining component being purified distilled water. DEF is odorless, non-toxic, and acts as a catalyst for the engine’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system—an advanced exhaust gas treatment technology equipped on most modern diesel vehicles and equipment to minimize Nitrogen Oxide output.
After the exhaust gas passes through the diesel particulate filter, the DEF solution is precisely injected and mixed into the exhaust stream via a metering control system before entering the SCR catalytic converter. Inside, the ammonia derived from the urea reacts with the NOx in the exhaust flow, generating nitrogen () and water vapor ()—two environmentally harmless substances. This process successfully reduces NOx emissions by up to 90%, simultaneously optimizing operational efficiency and cutting fuel consumption.
Vietnam is vigorously accelerating its emission control roadmap. Effective January 1, 2022, all newly manufactured and imported automobiles must meet Euro 5 emission standards. For vehicles manufactured since 2017, the Euro 4 emission standard becomes mandatory from January 1, 2026. These clear mandates create a critical need for supporting technical solutions, such as implementing the SCR system coupled with DEF, enabling diesel-powered vehicles to comply with technical regulations, protect the environment, and maximize operational performance.
DEF Phú Mỹ Xanh – The Pioneering Green Product for Diesel Engine Emission Control
Driven by the goal of sustainable development and environmental pollution reduction, and leveraging the advantages in raw materials and technology from the Plant, PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo - Phú Mỹ) has launched the high-quality, international-standard DEF - Phú Mỹ Xanh product line. This product features a 32.5% urea concentration—the most common level—specifically designed for diesel automobiles and trucks.
As the largest Urea producer in Vietnam with over 20 years of experience in the fertilizer production and trading sector, PVFCCo - Phú Mỹ secures a stable and proactive source of high-quality input materials for its DEF production. DEF - Phú Mỹ Xanh is manufactured on a modern production line, strictly adhering to the ISO 22241 standard for content and purity, and has achieved the SGS international quality certification.
PVFCCo-Phú Mỹ officially launched DEF Phú Mỹ Xanh to the market in June 2025. It is packaged in 10-20 liter cans/bottles or dispensed from dedicated DEF - Phú Mỹ Xanh fueling pumps. Users simply pour it directly into the vehicle’s DEF solution tank, with an average usage rate of 800 km per liter. The product offers a minimum shelf life of 12 months and is competitively priced, aligning perfectly with the actual operating conditions of Vietnamese businesses and consumers.
DEF Phú Mỹ Xanh is strategically distributed across petrol stations, authorized dealers, and e-commerce channels, ensuring easy access to genuine products for users. Notably, through collaboration within the Petrovietnam chain and to rapidly deliver the product to users, PVFCCo - Phú Mỹ signed a cooperation agreement with PetroVietnam Oil Corporation (PV Oil) in June 2025. This key partnership facilitates the distribution of DEF Phú Mỹ Xanh across PV Oil’s nationwide network of petrol stations.
The introduction of DEF - Phú Mỹ Xanh marks a significant new step in PVFCCo’s journey to expand its portfolio of chemical products. It plays a crucial role in modernizing internal combustion engines in transport vehicles and mitigating air pollution, particularly in major urban centers.
